How to Burn a Candle So It Lasts Longer
A handcrafted candle is more than home fragrance. It's an invitation to slow down, enjoy a quiet evening, and make home your favorite place to be.
A few simple habits will help your candle burn cleaner, smell better, and last much longer.
1. Let the First Burn Reach the Edge
The first burn is the most important.
Allow the wax to melt completely across the surface of the candle before extinguishing the flame. Depending on the candle size, this usually takes about 3 to 4 hours.
Doing this helps prevent tunneling and allows your candle to burn evenly for the rest of its life.
2. Trim the Wick
Before each burn, trim the wick to approximately ¼ inch.
A properly trimmed wick helps:
Produce a cleaner flame
Reduce soot
Improve fragrance throw
Extend the life of your candle
A wick trimmer makes this easy, but scissors work well too.
3. Burn Between Two and Four Hours
Candles perform best when burned between 2 and 4 hours at a time.
Burning significantly longer can cause the wick to mushroom and create excess soot.
4. Keep Away From Drafts
Avoid placing candles near ceiling fans, heating vents, or open windows.
Moving air causes uneven burning and can shorten the life of your candle.
5. Keep the Wax Clean
Before lighting your candle, remove wick trimmings, matches, or dust from the wax.
A clean wax surface helps create a cleaner, safer burn.
